Green Certification
Green certificate
A Green Certificate – terminology used in Europe – also known as Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) in the USA, are a tradable commodity proving that certain electricity is generated using renewable energy sources. Typically one certificate represents generation of 1 Megawatthour of electricity. What is defined as “renewable” varies from certificate trading scheme to trading scheme. Usually, at least the following sources are considered as renewable:
- Wind (often further divided into onshore and offshore)
- Solar (often further divided into photovoltaic and thermal)
- Wave (often further divided into onshore and offshore) and tidal (often further divided into onshore and offshore)
- Geothermal
- Hydro (often further divided into small - microhydro - and large)
- Biomass (mainly biofuels, often fur
Green certificates represent the environmental value of renewable energy generated. The certificates can be traded separately from the energy produced. Several countries use green certificates as a mean to make the support of green electricity generation closer to a market economy instead of more bureaucratic investment support and feed-in tariffs. Such national trading schemes are in use in e.g. Poland, Sweden, the UK, Italy, Belgium (Wallonia and Flanders), and some US states.
Once in the grid, renewable energy is impossible to separate from the conventionally generated energy. This makes purchasing of a green certificate equal to purchasing a claim, that the certificate owner consumed energy from the renewable portion of the whole energy in the grid. Therefore certificate purchase does not affect how much renewable energy was actually generated – only how it was distributed.
In contrast to CO2e-Reduction certificates, e.g. AAU’s or CER’s under the UNFCC, which can be exchanged worldwide, Green Certificates cannot be exchanged/traded between e.g. Belgium and Italy, let alone the USA and the EU member States.
Green Standard determines organization’s Green Approach abilty in three Levels:
- Green Organization – Level III
- Green Organization – Level II
- Green Organization – Level I
Green Organization- Level III – An organization awarded level III has demonstrated 76% to 100% compliance with the baseline requirements of the green standard. Where the organization demonstrates 76% and above compliance with the baseline, evidence of a reduction of GHG Emissions, exceeding compliance with regulatory requirements, demostrated an efficient use of Product, Processes, Resources and the use of recycled material as per the requirements (See Requirements), the organization shall be Green Organization complying Level III of the Green Standard.
Green Organization- Level II – An organization awarded level II has demonstrated 51% to 75% compliance with the baseline requirements of the green standard. Where organization demonstrates 51% and above compliance with the baseline, evidence of a reduction of GHG Emissions, exceeding compliances to regulatory requirements, demonstrated an efficient use of Product, Process, Resources and the use of recycled material as per the Standard Requirement (See Requirements), the organization shall be Green Organization complying Level II of the Green Standard.
Green Organization- Level I- An organization awarded level I has demonstrated 26% to 50% compliance with the baseline requirements of the green standard. Where the organization demonstrates 26% and above compliance with the baseline, evidence of a reduction of GHG Emissions, exceeding compliances to regulatory requirements, demonstrated efficient use of Product, Process, Resources and the use of recycled material as per the Standard Requirement (See Requirements), the organization shall be Green Organization complying Level I of the Green Standard.
